Since the launch of OpenAI in 2022, artificial intelligence (AI) has increasingly integrated into workplaces worldwide, reshaping how people work. In recent months, AI-powered tools like Gemini and Copilot have become essential across industries, raising concerns among professionals about job security and the future of employment.
Speaking in a TV Program, Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Bill Gates shared his thoughts on AI’s rapid evolution and its impact on jobs. When asked if humans should be worried about AI taking over soon, Gates acknowledged AI as a “deeply profound advancement” that will significantly alter industries. He compared AI’s evolution to the computing revolution, which transitioned computers from expensive and rare to widely accessible and affordable.
Gates emphasized that intelligence is currently a scarce resource, with a high demand for skilled professionals like doctors, engineers, and customer support representatives. AI, he said, is already exhibiting superhuman capabilities in problem-solving but still lacks perfect reliability, causing hesitation in its deployment. However, if implemented correctly, AI could revolutionize healthcare and education by making expert knowledge more accessible.
Discussing AI’s future in the workforce, Gates responded to concerns about job displacement, particularly in the tech industry. While many leaders, including NVIDIA’s Jensen Huang and OpenAI’s Sam Altman, have warned that AI could replace coders, Gates took a different stance. He asserted that three professions will remain irreplaceable by AI: coders, biologists, and energy experts.
According to Gates, coders will continue to play a crucial role in AI’s development and implementation. AI will assist biologists in tasks like disease diagnosis and DNA analysis, but since AI lacks creativity, it cannot make groundbreaking scientific discoveries. Similarly, Gates pointed out that energy experts operate in a highly complex field that cannot be fully automated, making their expertise indispensable.
While AI’s capabilities are advancing rapidly, Gates highlighted that its proper deployment would augment human efforts rather than replace them entirely.
